The Amazing New York Club Sandwich is one of our favorites. Their names are internationally known: Club sandwich, pastrami sandwich or the famous toast slices with peanut butter and jelly. But what makes soft bread with toppings so successful?

The inventor of the sandwich is generally regarded as the British John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich (1718-1792). “He had roast slices clamped between two slices of bread so that he could eat this sandwich, named after him in future, at the gaming table without cutlery,” says the story of the famous snack.

Why are Sandwiches so amazing?

If you want to serve original sandwiches with tea or beer and wine, you don’t really need a recipe. When it comes to sandwiches, there are no limits to creativity and imagination. Purists, however, swear by white bread instead of toast – it should be without rind and can be toasted. You spread it with soft butter or special sandwich creams (“spreads”).

Even with the classics, there are no limits to your own creativity. People see the possibility of having the ingredients for each sandwich put together individually in the restaurant or deli as an important characteristic of American sandwich culture. In addition to the corned beef sandwich with sauerkraut, one of the sandwich classics in the USA is the pastrami sandwich, for which the traditional New York deli “Katz’s Delicatessen” is famous worldwide.

Between two slices there are salad leaves, hard boiled eggs, thinly sliced roasts and smoked salmon, just about everything your heart desires. Nowadays, of course, you can also vary the bread: Bagels or wholemeal sandwiches are just as popular as toast bread. Bagels and sandwiches can be topped with avocado, ham, cheese and omelette.
